If you love the outdoors, Moab, Utah is the place for you. The varied variety of activities to choose from is why outdoor enthusiasts have flocked to Moab for years. Once you add a capable trail-rated Jeep to the mix, you have the recipe for an unsurpassed vacation.
Strap your mountain bike to the back of your Jeep and head out to one of the many popular bike trails outside of Moab. Many of the off-road trails play double duty for the avid mountain biker, including several of the more popular trails such as Gemini Bridges or Seven Mile Rim. Suitable for the novice mountain biker, the Gemini Bridges 13.5-mile ride is rough, but features inspiring views of the sandstone buttes, Monitor and Merrimac, and the 12,000-foot La Sal Mountains. If you’re not up to a rough ride, unload your Jeep in town and follow the smooth paved bike path to the north toward Arches National Park.
A great way to use your Jeep is to pack it full of climbing gear and head out for some of the world’s finest sandstone rock climbing. South of town, Indian Creek offers some of the best crack climbing in the country. Just five minutes from town, Potash Road offers a nice mix of beginner routes in an easily accessible area. Belay off your Jeep bumper because the climbing area is right next to the road. Don’t miss the petroglyphs along Potash road or the dinosaur tracks near the start of the Poison Spider off-road trail. If you’re into hard climbing, you’ll need your Jeep to navigate the four-wheel drive road to the trailhead for Fisher Towers. Although most routes on this spectacular rock formation are at the seriously experienced level, there are one or two routes for the moderate climber.
If biking or climbing isn’t your thing, use your Jeep to reach any number of trailheads to do some canyon backpacking, day hiking, and camping. Although you’ll need a permit while on BML land, the cost is minimal, and you’ll have an opportunity to get an up-close look at some of the Anasazi cliff dwelling ruins.
Want something a little less physical? Drive your Jeep fifteen miles to the north to the Moab airport to experience the thrill of freefall skydiving. With your instructor strapped to your back, a tandem skydive is the safest way to experience the sport. The view of the canyon lands from under canopy is spectacular and you’ll see this fascinating landscape from a perspective few have the opportunity to witness. If this is too extreme, a kayak will fit nicely on top of your Jeep. Enjoy the ride down the Colorado River as you paddle through the cliff- lined Castle Valley. The Colorado River is considered an intermediate kayak ride and the whitewater is interspersed with just enough serene stretches to allow you to catch your breath.
Mountain bikes, camping equipment, and kayaks can all be rented in Moab, so no need to worry about lack of gear. So take advantage of your Jeep’s capability and use it to access all the outdoor recreational opportunities the Moab area offers. You won’t be disappointed!
