Jeep® Heritage | 1966 Jeep Super Wagoneer

1966 Jeep Super Wagoneer

Each Friday on the Jeep® Blog, we explore the Jeep brand’s iconic heritage by highlighting a different historical vehicle. This week’s vehicle is the 1966 Jeep Super Wagoneer.

Look! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s…it’s…the versatile and rugged 4×4 with premium, luxury sedan comfort…the 1966 Jeep Super Wagoneer!

For some people, features such as air conditioning, power tailgate, power brakes, and a seven-position tilt steering wheel might seem pedestrian. And they are, to a certain extent, nowadays. But those who’ve been around the block a little longer can remember just how new – and prestigious – those features were when the 1966 Jeep Super Wagoneer was introduced.

The Super Wagoneer was elegant, and its luxury features pointed to the future of the sport utility market. The MSRP of almost twice that of the base Wagoneer was justified, with standard features including:

  • Air conditioning
  • Power tailgate
  • Power brakes
  • Power steering
  • Seven-position tilt steering wheel
  • Tinted windows
  • Three-tone body striping
  • Vinyl roof
  • Padded vinyl roof with chrome roof-rack
  • Full wheel hubcaps
  • White-walled tires
  • 327-cubic-inch “Vigilante” four-barrel V8 engine (270 hp)
  • Console-shifted TH400 Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission

The tradition of building luxury SUVs with capability and premium features continues today with the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Stay tuned to the Jeep Blog as we continue to look at the most important Jeep vehicles of the 1960s and beyond.
