Each Friday on the Jeep_® Blog, we explore the Jeep brand’s iconic heritage by highlighting a different historical vehicle. This week’s vehicle is the 1967 Jeepster Commando.

In bringing back the “Jeepster” name (from the 1948-1951 Jeep Willys Jeepster), the Jeep brand gave a nod and a wink to the past while introducing a full lineup of vehicle body styles. In 1967, the Jeepster Commando Roadster, Jeepster Commando Pickup, Jeepster Commando Convertible, and Jeepster Commando Station Wagon vehicles were introduced to the public.

 

 

The Commando was, first of all, designed to be fun, on or off the road (or on the beach – the brand went for a youthful push in marketing the vehicle, as the beautiful red Jeepster above so ably displays). From 1967 to 1971, the Jeepster Commando was built on the CJ-6 chassis. The four body options represented a full spectrum of versatility, from the smooth luxury styling of the roadster to the capability of the pickup.

 

 

Today, Jeep brand enthusiasts still love the “Dauntless” V6 engine, optional TH400 transmission, and full floating Dana 27 front and 44 rear axles that the original Jeepster Commando sported. In 1972-1973, the next iteration of the vehicle (the name “Jeepster” was dropped) was built. The Commando’s front end was restyled to accommodate engines, a fact that could have contributed to the vehicle’s discontinuation in 1973.
